Call for concept proposals in the field of Critical Peace Studies in Turkey


Off-University is inviting concept proposals for four different research activities in the field of “Critical Peace Studies in Turkey “ to be carried out from April 2022 – December 2022. The joint aim of the individual activities is to feed into the collaborative development of an Off-University critical peace research agenda. Therefore, we explicitly look for proposals that take on an interdisciplinary approach, value different kinds of knowledges and work towards de-centering traditional perspectives on peace and conflict in Turkey. In case you would like to apply, but don't find your specific take on critical peace studies in Turkey represented in the below activities, please get in touch so that we can evaluate possible options together.

Alongside the general application materials, the applications to each activity require additional documents. Before applying, please read all requirements and the application criteria attentively and reach out to us in case you have any questions. Due to funding stipulations, we need all applicants to include an estimated budget and time frame in your concept proposals.


Activity 1: Working paper on Critical Peace Studies in Turkey

We call for one researcher to produce a 50-pages long working paper in English or Turkish that explores already existing academic and activist knowledge in the field of Critical Peace Studies in Turkey and is to be published on the collaborative online platform https://off.pubpub.org/ by the end of June 2022. Afterwards, the researcher is expected to hold an online roundtable discussion on the findings of the paper.

Alongside the general application materials, please include:

- concept proposal: abstract of up to 150 words; estimated time (in working days) and budget

- writing sample (in English or Turkish)

- academic CV that indicates your relation to critical peace studies in Turkey


Activity 2: Blog series on gendered aspects of war & peace in Turkey

We call for one researcher to produce a 10-piece blog series on gendered aspects of war & peace in Turkey that will be published on Off-University's website. Each blog post should be of a minimum length of four pages and will highlight different, well-researched aspects of gender, peace and conflict in Turkey. Texts can be written in English, Turkish or Kurdish from April 2022 - December 2022.

Alongside the general application materials, please include:

- concept proposal: 10 titles for blog posts; estmated time (in working days) and budget


Activity 3: Online lab on non-human aspects of Critical Peace Studies in Turkey

We call for two researchers to carry out an online lab on non-human aspects of Critical Peace Studies in Turkey. As such, the lab can feature, but is not limited to, topics such as memorials in Turkey and their role in conflict, the ecological afterlives of war, or the role of land-politics in establishing long-lasting peace. The lab will take place in two phases. The first one, a research phase, will be documented with two five-page blog entries. In the second phase (October – December), the two scholars will collaboratively hold a weekly online lab on Off-University's secure online learning platform, in which they share and discuss their findings with postgraduate researchers, students and political actors. You can apply individually or together with a research partner.

Alongside the general application materials, please include:

- concept proposal: research proposal (up to 1000 words excluding literature) that introduces your research interest and a preliminary research question; estimated time (in working days) and budget

- documentation of previous teaching experience if applicable (i.e. syllabus of previously taught class)


Activity 4: Podcast series on critical approaches to conflict resolution in Turkey

We call for a researcher to produce three 45 - minutes podcast episodes that introduce critical approaches to conflict resolution in Turkey. The podcast series should be produced in Turkish from April - December 2022 and will be published on Off-University's website. The researcher is expected to organize an (online)-launch event of the podcast series.

Alongside the general application materials, please include:

- concept proposal: three topics for podcasts (describe in maximum 150 words each); estimated time (in working days) and budget

- listening sample/ documentation of previous podcasting experience if applicable


General Application Requirements:

- Being politically (1) persecuted and/or displaced and (2) unemployed and/or in material need

- Holding (at least) a master’s degree

- Researchers are required to act in accordance with the Off-University Code of Conduct, which can be found here.


General Application Materials (to be submitted for all activities):

- academic CV

- a short statement of persecution and material situation and/or immigration status (max. 500 words)

- one paragraph (300 words max.) that answers the question: What is your vision for critical peace research on/in Turkey?

All application materials can be submitted in English or Turkish.

Applicants of non-cis-male gender and early-career researchers are strongly encouraged to apply and will be given priority where qualifications are equal. Applicants with disabilities will be given priority where qualifications are equal.

After we hear from you, we will create a personal folder on your name on our platform. You will receive a private message with further instructions on how to upload your application material. Please note that for reasons of confidentiality all communication will take place via the platform messaging system and not via E-Mail. Please make sure to log in periodically to receive information and updates on the application process.

If you already have an account on  www.coworkingsquares.de please write a short note to courses@off-university.de. We will create a personal folder there for you. All submissions should be submitted on the platform by 22nd March 2022 29th March 2022 at midnight (Central European Time). You will be notified by 7th April 2022 about the preliminary outcome of your application. All activities will start by April 15th 2022.
