Call for Course Proposals for 2021/22

Off-University is inviting proposals for online courses in three areas: “Gender Studies,” “Critical Peace Studies,” and “Rethinking University.” Courses will be taught on the Off-University online learning platform during the 2021 winter term (14 weeks, October 2021 – February 2022).

We explicitly look for proposals that contribute to the formation of democratic and gender-equitable societies by strengthening solidarity in the society and progressive actors to defend democratic spaces and rights and help shape socio-political debates in Turkey.

The lecturers of selected courses will receive 1000 € per month for a total of five months as an honorarium for their teaching. Off-University’s online-learning platform offers a virtual classroom including chat options, video live streaming, virtual blackboard, and a shared file management system. Over the last three years, we have hosted 33 interactive online courses, most of which have been certified by German and North American universities with recognized credits. ECTS credits can be transferred to a home university after completion. Off-University, however, is open for anybody to join, not only participants enrolled at a university.

Gender Studies

Two courses on gender studies will be offered next semester. There is a global attack on Gender Studies, and even though the significant threat comes from authoritarian governments, the legitimacy of gender studies is repeatedly being discredited by non-academic actors.  For this semester, we call for proposals on gender studies from all disciplines. However, we specifically look for a strong emphasis on gender debates in Turkey.

Critical Peace Studies

One course on the topic will be hosted in the winter term. We are looking for courses dealing with the concept of peace from cultural, social, psychological, economic, and political angles from interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary perspectives to deepening the understanding of peace and conflict dynamics. We are especially interested in proposals that cross the divide between natural sciences and social sciences. Again, we are firmly looking for the inclusion of critical peace and conflict debates in Turkey for the proposals.

Rethinking University

One to two courses under this category will be hosted next winter semester. Since the universities are under attack for social, political, and economic reasons, we believe that, it is time to re-think our understanding of the university. Proposals from different fields, theoretical and empirical perspectives on discussing the university, and the inclusion of international debates in the proposals are strongly encouraged. However, discussing the infringements on higher education, as well as alternative spaces of education in Turkey also has grave importance for the proposals.

As course proposals will be selected by an international team of scholars, please submit your application material in English only.

Course proposals do not need to solely focus on Turkey, but a certain emphasis on Turkey is necessary. Comparative aspects in the course are highly encouraged. Course proposals are expected to reflect the recent discourse of the field, advocate diversity in the canon and promote creativity and the active participation of students.  Please indicate your experience in teaching an online course and your knowledge on interactive e-learning methods in your application.

Off-University is committed to an academic life connecting teaching and research. It therefore encourages applications for courses that involve the course participants in the instructor’s actual research activity. This can be achieved by for instance through collective data collection and analysis that involves the participants in an intellectually demanding way, the critical evaluation of instructor’s draft research papers by the participants or the involvement of participants in future common publications or other ways of knowledge dissemination (blogs, wikis, films, conferences etc.). We offer advice on how to integrate research activities into future courses and will help to further develop teaching activities in this direction.
